Ride:Awakening (Puca Mates #1) by A.C.James ~Audiobook Review~

*** This a not a full-length book. This novella is part one of a serial romance.***

Felicity Forrest has the perfect job as an investigative blogger for Everyday Supernatural. This curvy girl gets sent to the Aran Islands to find out whether a púca shape shifter is responsible for the strange accidents haunting a construction site.

Niall O’Leary is tall, broody, and totally alpha. His mission is to discover why the veil between the human world and the Realm has lifted. And as the Chieftain’s son he must find a mate or his twin will be promised to a stallion he despises. He has a duty to his family, his clan, and a need for offspring. Otherwise the púca could become nothing more than folklore.

Passion and frustration ignite when a curvy human female tempts his inner stallion like no other. There’s only one problem… She just got out of a relationship that left her broken hearted. Is she ready for a second chance at love?

Reader Note: This book is for those who are 18+. It contains explicit language, sexual situations, and one helluva cliffhanger. However, if you like curvy shifter romance, a stallion who can’t resist his curvy woman, and a dash of humor, then this is the story for you. Please read these installments in order. Enjoy!

My Review

Let me start by saying that I never thought I would enjoy audiobooks. I have won a few over the years in various contests and my audio library sits a mere four titles. I thought I would be bored and lose the story to background noise so I never really looked into the format. I have definitely changed my mind on that and this book is a big part of the reason why. I had a long drive to make and the radio in my car is not really functional, so I decided to finally listen to the books on my Kindle. The first one left a sour taste in my mouth and I wasn’t sure I really wanted to listen to another but with nine hours of solo driving looming, I forged ahead.

That attitude led me to Ride, and I am so glad I persevered. First, the story itself engaged my attention. The characters were surprisingly developed for a novella. Felicity is a strong and independent woman who has a bit of a bruised heart and feels that her size is keeping her from finding true love. She is an open minded, free spirit who writes a blog on paranormal activity. During one of her investigations she meets Niall. Now Niall is all alpha male with rugged handsomeness and a lilting Irish brogue. Not someone Felicity thinks would be attracted to her despite her attraction to him. The sparks fly between these two and the tension escalates. Niall is hiding secrets and Felicity is trying to maintain distance. Neither of them easy tasks when fate is weaving her web. This is a serialized story and Ride leaves you with a cliff hanger.

The narration really help to bring the story to a new level. The narrator, used different voice tones for the characters as well as adding emotions to her reading. This is what sold me on audiobooks. I really enjoyed hearing the words come alive. As the first one I listened to was very mono-toned and without inflections, I was delighted to find that was not always the case.
